Application of SFP Cable

SFP cable, also known as 10G SFP + cable, SFP + DAC biaxial cable or SFP + AOC cable, is a Form of high-speed cable with Small Form Factor Pluggable Plus at both ends. They apply to in-rack connections between servers and switches. The popularity of SFP cables can be attributed to the dominance of CAT5E copper cables and 1000BASE-T in data center interconnection applications, however, upgrading to 10GE, 40GE or higher poses significant barriers in terms of power consumption and cost. At this point, the 10G SFP + is connected directly to the copper cable, making it the new darling of rack-type exchange tops.
WHAT IS SFP CABLE?
The SFP cable replaces two optical modules and connector fibers with a biaxial copper cable assembly, offering a 10 Gb Ethernet solution with higher density, lower cost and lower power consumption compared to other cable types such as 10GBASE-CX4 and CAT6 / CAT6A 10GBASE-T. SFP cable can be divided into 10G SFP + DAC cable and 10G SFP + AOC cable. SFP + AOC has longer transmission range (BBB 0 100m), isolation from signal interference and crosstalk, and higher signal transmission capacity, but is more expensive than SFP + DAC. SFP + DAC consists of active DAC and passive DAC. Passive DAC cables do not have signal amplification built into the cable assembly, so ultra-short distances can be achieved (<5m), while active DAC cables have signal amplification and equalization built into the cable assembly, which can simultaneously produce longer distances (5-15m) at a higher price.
SFP CABLE: 10G SFP + CABLE AND 25G SFP28 CABLE
We already know that the SFP + runs at 10Gb/s. The SFP28, as an enhanced version of SFP +, is designed for 25G signal transmission. The SFP28 uses the same overall dimensions as the SFP +, but the electrical interface has been upgraded to handle 25Gbps per channel. In short, the 10G SFP + cable and the 25G SFP28 cable have the same dimensions but different speeds. In addition, the 25G SFP port can support all 10G SFP +, which means that the 10G SFP + cable can be plugged into the 25G SFP port.
HOW TO USE SFP CABLE?
Because 10G networks are widely deployed in today's data centers, 10G SFP cables are typically used in interconnection applications below 100M, such as server-to-switch or storage-to-switch interconnections in the same rack (as shown in the figure below). Now, the most popular is 25GbE, and there are already 25G direct-connected cable assemblies on the market, such as the SFP28 DAC. For 40GbE, use 40G QSFP + DAC and AOC. Of course, backbone switches require higher speeds and more bandwidth. Therefore, in this case, a 100G DAC such as the QSFP28 DAC will be used.
